Stella - Maryhill
"My little Border Terrier, Stella, is my first dog. Because she is my first dog, and I have no experience with dog training, I decided it would be a very good idea to get her started on training as soon as she was able. I called Sandra and we agreed that 12 weeks was the perfect time for Stella to start clicker obedience training.
Stella bonded with Sandra straight away and gave her her full attention. Within the space of a few short clicks, Stella was sitting down on command. By the end of that first session she was able to 'sit', 'leave', and 'watch me'. From that time on, I believe that Stella was happier in herself because she knew what was expected of her and she behaved beautifully. As the weeks went on, Stella learned to 'lie', 'come', walk nicely on the leash, and most impressively (for me, that is) walk off leash and respond to her recall command.
Although all four of Stella's sessions were quite incredible in terms of speed of learning and general ability, I think the last session was by far the best. Sandra and I agreed that it would be great for Stella if she could go to the Kelvin Park and be let off leash amongst other dogs. I admit, I was a little nervous but those nerves soon calmed when I noticed how focused Stella was on me and Sandra. We took a slowly, slowly approach at first and called Stella back whilst she was still attached to a very long leash. After that exercise it was clear that she would come back equally as well off leash and so we let her off. Stella came back every time she was called. Even in the midst of a scrum of very big dogs, Stella was the one who came back after she was called. I could never have anticipated that at 16 weeks old, Stella - the smallest and youngest dog in the park - would come back every single time she was called.
Stella is 18 weeks now and continues to go from strength to strength. The work that Stella and I did with Sandra has proven invaluable. Stella is a happy, well-adjusted little dog who has most definitely blossomed from her clicker training. She is confident, sure and is now showing a lovely adventurous side, a side which I believe has been encouraged by her knowing what is expected of her and knowing her boundaries.
I would wholeheartedly recommend this method of training
to any dog owner and I would recommend getting started as soon as possible
because it really is amazing what can be achieved."
Millie - Lenzie
I'm so glad we got in touch with you to help with her training as your methods have proved a great success. Millie's a joy now because she listens to us (albeit she still has her mad puppy moments!) and it's all been done with love and rewards, something I previously doubted would work on its own. Matthew is forever going on about how good "Sandra the Teacher" was and what a difference she has made to Millie, which is praise indeed - from a 9yr old!
I can't recommend you and your methods highly enough and will continue to recommend you to anyone I talk to who might be interested in getting some help with their dog".
"Rufus was about a year old, when we got him from Cardonald Cat and Dog home. Being so young he had boundless amounts of energy which we found hard to contain, from jumping up on everyone to taking mad half hours where he was literally running rings around us. Sandra at A-grade dog training was a great help. Using positive reinforcement, Sandra taught us how to use the "clicker" response which Rufus responded very well to. Sandra helped us realise not only that Rufus needed a lot of exercise to tire him out, but that he needed to be mentally stimulated.
Once we implemented the lessons- the change was huge and we started to notice a difference from the first lesson. Once we saw these changes- this gave us the incentive to continue with the training which we still do as it keeps Rufus stimulated as well as having a calming influence on him.
When we had an "incident" with a neighbour and Rufus, Sandra gave us advice on what to do- which was greatly appreciated! We only had 3 lessons with Sandra and we now have a chilled out dog, but who hasn't lost his personality and is a pleasure to have in our lives."
Ellie & Co - Maryhill Park
"Ellie is our third dog - a female border terrier to join our two older boys (Jock & Cal)- both border terriers. We did all the usual puppy training classes which Ellie responded to well.
However, she remained hard to control with all three on a walk- she barked and lunged aggressively at other dogs, jumped up on people and was obsessed with fox scents and routes.
We found Sandra and began our [yes our] training and learned about positive behaviour control with clicker training.
Sandra immediately had Ellie's attention and we learned
to progress from responses to commands in the house, outside and then
outside with all three dogs.
Over the weeks we have observed the changes we wanted
to see in Ellie. She now comes back on command, we can distract her from
scents and she approaches other dogs without being aggressive and no longer
A major lesson is that training never really ends and we need to keep it going with all our dogs. We really wish we had found Sandra earlier. She is practical, patient and professional and Ellie [and the rest of us] has benefitted enormously from the training.
"Sandra - I'd just like to thank you for the help
I got from you in getting Harry trained- I could not believe how fast
you got results when I had been trying for weeks.
The clicker you gave me is great and I still use it 3 months since you
first showed me how to use it in his training programme.
I will contact you again when puppy no2 comes! Thanks again".
"We found with our dog Bella that training made a huge difference to her attitude. She now respects us more and is a lot more mature. She was taught many commands which have been very handy and was trained how to walk without pulling the lead. We found training was fun as well as very helpful.
The Trainer, Sandra at A-Grade, gave us some easy steps when we followed on the training, which made what seemed impossible, extremely possible. Bella had a great time".
"My husband and I recently became the proud owners of a tiny cross breed puppy called Miya. Since it is many years since I have owned a puppy and my husband has never owned one we decided that we should have training sessions for her so we were both working off the same page.
After much searching we decided on contacting Sandra of A-Grade Dog training. Sandra offers one to one training at home, which we felt would be of benefit as Miya would be comfortable and there would be less distraction. We could not believe how quickly she struck up a rapport with Miya and was almost instantly able to get her to obey a few simple commands (something we had not been able to do).
Miya has now had three sessions and is able to listen when asked, sit, stay, down, leave, and come when called even when distracted by toys, other dogs etc. She also walks well on leash and will allow us to check her over including her teeth - a great help when having checkups at the Vets.
Our only regret is that the sessions are now over for a while until we decide on further training.
Sandra has left us the tools and skills to continue
to encourage Miya to be a happy and well behaved puppy and we cannot thank
I have no hesitation in allowing Sandra either my email or telephone if anyone wants a reference in the future".
Millie - Bearsden
"When Millie became part of our family our aim was to have an obedient family pet. Sandra came highly recommended and her enthusiastic, practical approach to training Millie - and us - was fantastic.
The format of weekly training sessions at our home with clear follow up sheets for " homework" worked brilliantly. A few sessions later and we had passed puppy obedience...more importantly we had a well trained puppy who absolutely adored her training sessions!
the one-to-one training invaluable and would have no hesitation in recommending
Sandra, a wonderful experience all round."
Sherlock - Anniesland
"Sandra, I would like to thank you for your help in training my wee Westie puppy, Sherlock. He continues to work so well with the clicker training. I could not believe how quickly Sherlock responded to your commands and saw how much he enjoyed your sessions. This was all done in a kind and positive way, which has helped us bond even more with Sherlock if that is possible!
Sherlock not only learned the commands every dog needs like toilet training, sit, down, stay, stand, stopping jumping up, leave and recall, but he also had a few other issues which were really helped with your training.
Sherlock was very apprehensive about going into his crate, especially when the door was closed and became upset and vocal - however, you very quickly showed us how to encourage Sherlock to enjoy his own space, and now he loves his crate!
You also helped Sherlock with his anxiety over being separated from us so that we can now leave him alone downstairs at night, and also when we are going out, and we're continuing to encourage him to settle quickly and happily.
Sherlock had also been a bit scared of traffic such as lorries and vans, and we now know how to work on him being calm in busier traffic times.
The best lesson Sherlock has learned has been in a fabulous recall - on your final visit when we went to the park, I was amazed at how focused Sherlock was on me, and how he came back like a shot every single time he was called!
It was not
only Sherlock who enjoyed your visits - myself and my Mum and Dad also
had fun learning from you on how to have a happy, well trained dog we
can enjoy for life.
Trixie - Old Kilpatrick
"We recently became the proud owners of Trixie, a Cocker Spaniel puppy. We decided to look for a dog trainer in order that she got the best start in life and would end up being a 'dream dog to take anywhere' and we were recommended Sandra of A-Grade Dog Training.
This turned out to be a great recommendation. Sandra
offered training at home, and within three visits she had quickly taught
us and the dog the basic commands of sit, lying down, stand, stay, recall,
leave, and walking without pulling on the lead. Also some fun stuff like
paw and high five came later.
Basically she was very approachable with any problems you had been encountering, we could not believe how quickly she struck up a relationship with Trixie who recognised her and enjoyed each visit.
Sessions are also backed up with a hand out on what had been getting taught in each visit and Sandra e-mailed them to us, which was most helpful. The sessions are over now but it's great to know we are welcome to phone her with any problems or request another visit.
Sandra has left us the knowledge and skills to continue to encourage Trixie to be a well behaved dog and it's up to us now to continue and be consistent with her training.
I have and would recommend Sandra to new and existing dog owners whom we come across.
Trixie says: "Big thanks Sandra - I have two great
parents now who have been taught to continue to bring me up correctly
without shouting or losing patience with me, life's great - High Five!"
Beau - Bearsden
"Sandra, I would just like to thank you very much for all your help with Beau, my Cockapoo.
As you know I have trained dogs before and knew the basics but I was a bit out of touch with modern methods and lacked direction. Under your clear instruction I was able to re-focus my efforts as I now knew what I was trying to achieve. Beau responded very well to the reward based methods you used and was an eager student.
I regularly tell the dog owners that I meet about you and I wholeheartedly recommend you to anyone who is looking for a trainer. Your methods are kind and fun and equally enjoyable for both dog and owner. Many thanks".
Copper - Balornock
"Copper, our Kings Charles Spaniel, is our second family dog. Unfortunately our first dog was a very negative experience for us, and when we decided to try again with a new dog we were determined to make it a more positive experience.
When we got Copper we decided to get help from a trainer and we found Sandra. Copper bonded with Sandra right away and was so responsive to the training. Copper had four sessions with Sandra and we are all having so much fun with him - he also likes to show off at times with what he has learned!
He's a wonderful addition to our family and a joy to be with as he is so well trained. Copper learned all basic commands such as sit, down, stay, stand, leave, greeting other dogs, walking well on the lead and a great recall. He's also learned some fun things like paw and fetch, and we're working on rolling over! Copper is always learning and enjoys the training very much.
Sandra provided useful advice and strategies to enable
all of this - thank you Sandra" !
Millie - Dumbarton
"We felt the training provided by Sandra for Millie was great as she was still a youngster adapting to her surroundings. We had problems with her puppy biting and, as a large breed, her pulling on the lead. We were shown various techniques which we continued to use over some months to see excellent results in modifying Millie's behaviour.
The clicker training we were taught to use played a big part in rewarding Millie for her good behaviour and showing her how to act both indoors and outdoors, for example with teaching her to come back each time she was called.
In the end these training techniques were invaluable
both for our peace of mind and Millie's safety".
Jack - Bearsden
"Our Lakeland terrier, Jack Sparra, was bred for
showing and spent his first year living in a kennel with his extended
family. He came to live with us after the breeders decided to re-home
him. On arrival he was shy and found it difficult to settle, constantly
carrying out an inventory of whatever room he was in! The most immediate
issue (at least from our point of view) was that he wasn't house trained.
He also pulled while on the lead and had not been taught any commands.
Purdie - Bearsden
"Having a puppy again at just 7 weeks old was a bit of a shock for us and for our 12 year old lab, Penny.
However, our life has been made easier after we contacted Sandra at A Grade Dog Training. We were very pleased with her help, commitment and affection towards Purdie. We have managed to teach her a number of skills using the clicker system and some tricks which our grandchildren love. This included effective toilet training, watch, sit, down, stay, leave, puppy mouthing, walking on the lead and recall.
Purdie is now a happy, mischievous young dog, and fellow dog owners often comment on how well behaved she is at just 5 months old.
She is the best trained lab we've ever had! Thanks Sandra".
Ralph - Stepps
"Sandra, we would like to thank you for all your help in teaching us the training techniques for our wee Westie, Ralph. Within the space of a few training sessions, Ralph grasped the most fundamental commands - sit, down, stay, watch, leave, come, walking on the lead etc... We had never heard of the clicker training before and were extremely impressed at how Ralph has responded to it.
The clicker is a positive, friendly method of training and combined with Sandra's amazing techniques, Ralph really took to the learning and did so at speedy pace. We thoroughly enjoyed it too and still use the clicker for teaching Ralph new things.
Ralph was only 3 months old when we started the training and now at 4 and a half months old people are amazed at how obedient he is at such a young age. He does still have his cheeky-chappy moments as most puppies do, however we are much more confident in controlling his behaviour and he is very responsive to the positive training techniques.
We would certainly recommend Sandra to any dog owner.
The training techniques we learned are invaluable skills that we will
treasure and, along with Sandra's magical way with dogs, makes for both
happy owners and waggy tails!"
Sheikha - Maryhill Park
"Hi Sandra. As you know, our collie-cross Sheikha had become afraid of going out for walks, initially at night time and then also during the day. We had no idea why this had happened, but knew that we needed help to get her back to enjoying being outside. When you first came to see Sheikha, the mention of a walk had her cowering and unwilling to progress from our lounge to the front door. This began to change from the first session, and by our second session Sheikha was going up and down our street.
Can I update you on progress: Last Saturday Sheikha went off for our morning walk without me needing to use the clicker or treats. She has kept this up for all our morning walks, although she is still wary at night time. We have now been able to go to the Kelvin walkway and she is off the lead. However she is still very nervous around other dogs, which I know needs work and you will be working with Sheikha soon to help deal with this.
Slowly but surely we are getting there. We have some more work to do, but I can't thank you enough for getting us to this stage!!!!!"
Murphy - Bearsden
"We have recently completed our 4 week puppy training plan with Sandra and are over the moon with our new, improved version of Murphy.
He is now well on the road to being fully trained and I am able to carry on with day to day top up training thanks to the feedback printouts which Sandra emailed after our sessions.
What I hadn't expected was just how much fun we had together and how responsive and willing to learn Murphy was; he absolutely thrived on the praise he was given after each achievement. The whole process has been a pleasure from start to finish. Sandra had such a wonderful way with Murphy, a very calm and confident presence while dealing with a very excitable puppy- her patience with both Murphy and myself was endless!
Thanks again Sandra for a really lovely experience."
Brenna - Bearsden
"Brenna is our fourth Labrador. Each dog has had their own personalities and training was easier with some than with others. We have a three year old lab Rowan who is a beautiful but strong and wilful dog meaning that we have our hands full a great deal of the time.
With Brenna we really wanted to get her training right and not have to worry about any problems her behaviour would bring. On the recommendation of a friend we contacted Sandra at A-Grade Dog Training. Sandra took Brenna on board at the tender age of eight weeks and within four sessions Brenna was already a well behaved girl.
It is quite incredible what Sandra can achieve in just
one session. She quickly becomes a good friend and mentor and I hope that
I can continue the good work that Sandra has started with Brenna. We are
now hoping that Sandra will work her magic on Rowan and correct the mistakes
that we have made with her and that in the end we will have two well trained
dogs at our sides."
Charlie - Bearsden
"We first met Sandra when Charlie (our Weimaraner) was only ten weeks old. We had no idea what to expect from our new pup and didn't have much experience at all with dog training.
We wanted to ensure that Charlie had a happy life but one where he knew what was expected of him. Charlie instantly loved Sandra and she made it look so easy when teaching him new commands. When Sandra tought us new commands every week it all made sense. She was very patient and professional.
We practiced with Charlie every day, only for a little while at a time, and Sandra came round weekly for three weeks to continue the training. Charlie is now 17 weeks old and doing great.
We would recommend Sandra to anyone and can't thank her enough for all her help."
Dougall - Bearsden
"Our West Highland Terrier, Dougall, had a little experience of group training but we felt he needed individual attention as he is very energetic and mischievous.
We learned sit and stay, down, watch, leave, the "recall" command (which he seemed to pick up straightaway - and which was ideal when I needed to get him back in the park), rollover (which I loved!), paw and high five, which is an extension of the "paw" command and is great for showing off to your friends!!
Finally we went outside to practice walking to heel on a loose lead. Dougall was very quick to learn and looked fantastic walking alongside Sandra!! Practice makes perfect, and we continually repeat all we have learned on a daily basis.
Thanks Sandra for all your enthusiasm and help in creating a more obedient dog who does us proud!"
Wallace - Dumbarton
"My experience with Sandra's training was excellent, very educational as a first time dog owner.
All elements of the training were fantastic but I found the clicker training particularly useful.
Wallace has come on leaps & bounds from the training, and this has given me a great benchmark to ensure he has a great life with the Ledgerwood family!!"
Prada - West End, Glasgow
"Prada was my first dog and I wanted to learn how to train her. There's lots of information in books and on the internet, but I found some of it to be conflicting and confusing. I tried enrolling in training classes but they wanted the puppies to be at least 6 months old.
As I particularly needed help with Prada's bad habit of nipping me when she wanted attention, I decided to look for someone to provide us with one to one training.
Sandra was great. On our first evening she helped my partner and I understand why Prada was nipping and how to deal with it, along with using the clicker in the correct way for training of basic obedience commands. Practicing every day, Prada responded really well. We then moved on to lead training and recall. Recall was particularly good as it gave me confidence in being able to get Prada to come back to me when off the lead.
I've already recommended Sandra to people I've met - we often get stopped whilst walking as Prada has become such a great dog to have around."
Barney - Blairdardie, Glasgow
"Following a referral from our vet, we asked Sandra to come and work with our Cocker Spaniel, Barney. Barney had a number of issues such as separation anxiety, excessive jumping up, toileting when he was left alone and constant barking for attention.
Barney's behaviour has improved so much since Sandra came to visit us - she has been absolutely great and we couldn't recommend her more!
Sandra taught us how to work with Barney when he was displaying his unwanted behaviours and he is now so much better. It's still early days, but he's responding really well to his clicker training, his separation anxiety has gone and he no longer whines or toilets when we leave him (a massive improvement), his jumping up has diminished and barks for attention SO much less.
Sandra was so friendly and down-to earth and I couldn't believe how well Barney responded to her either! The techniques she taught us made perfect sense and Barney's behaviour has just improved so much, to the extent that we now feel confident enough to let him off his lead on walks as well.
Thanks so much for all of your help Sandra!"
Annie - Cumbernauld
"We found Sandra to be an excellent resource when we needed help in calming Annie down. Although we had been through basic training in the past, she was still growling/snapping at people and she needed to learn not to be so protective of me. Her behaviour had escalated to an unacceptable level as she had made contact/bitten more than once whilst "guarding" me.
The one to one approach helped us enormously in modifying Annie's behaviour - she has now learned that displaying good behaviour gets her praise/reward, whilst bad behaviour gets her absolutely nothing, and this has been key to modifying her aggressive behaviour. We have also learned to be more aware of Annie's body language so that we can anticipate any change, and although we know we should remain vigilant, my family/friends can now sit beside me without the same fear of Annie's repercussions, and people can walk past our garden without being warned away with excessive barking!
We can't thank Sandra enough for her enthusiasm and positive attitude in helping us to understand why Annie was behaving as she did - we needed the training as much as Annie!"
Lucy - Stepps, Glasgow
"When Lucy came into our family life she was a very exuberant liver Flat Coated Retriever.
I received excellent referral advice from our local vet who told us to contact Sandra of A-Grade Dog Training - who he said was "the best dog trainer around" in his opinion.
In week one Sandra arrived and one hour later we had a dog that could sit, lie down, leave and recall - where Lucy learned to come back to us in an instant. The recall technique and practice now means that Lucy returns to us whenever we are out and about. In addition, Sandra managed this with the whole family involved (kids too) - and made it fun for all.
By week two Lucy could stay, stand, roll over, give a paw and high five, and we also learned new ways to stop her jumping up - fabulous!
Week three was outside loose lead training - this to me was the best lesson of all as I now have a dog that walks calmly by my side - for me a crucial skill as a flat coated retriever is a large and powerful breed of dog.
I receive loads of comments on how well behaved Lucy
is now and I beam with delight. Thanks so much Sandra, and my daughter
summed you up in one word - awesome!"
Dougal - Bearsden
"As a family we had never owned a dog before and were complete novices. It was of the utmost importance to us that our dog, Dougal, would be well controlled and obedient. We have a busy household with two young daughters and, as such, often have many children coming to visit. Our worst nightmare would have been a dog that couldn't be controlled and would have to be shut away when visitors arrived. We also wanted our daughters to be able to be involved in Dougal's training and decided to contact Sandra from A-grade Dog Training. This has proved to be an excellent decision .
Sandra's sessions were extremely enjoyable, informative and focused. The one to one training resulted in far quicker progress than puppy training classes. After only two sessions with Sandra, Dougal had learned to sit, lie down, leave, watch me, give a paw and return when called. We were absolutely amazed!
We visited my daughter's nursery when Dougal was just 14 weeks old and had only been with us for a fortnight. This was a real test for Dougal, myself and Sandra's training techniques. Surrounded by children, Dougal was relaxed, focused on his commands and totally at ease with the whole situation. I was so proud of us all and had to contact Sandra to boast! The lead training and outdoor training were also extremely valuable and informative.
Working with Sandra has been a wonderful experience. She has a very positive, upbeat and enthusiastic manner that is motivating and inspiring. Sandra praised and encouraged us at all times. Even when we were unintentionally rewarding the wrong behaviour, she was never patronising and very diplomatically pointed us in the correct direction.
Sandra heavily involved my 8 year old daughter, Anna,
in the training, which she absolutely loved, and has provided her with
a fantastic bond with Dougal. We really cannot recommend Sandra more highly
and thank her immensely for a fantastic experience."
Brodie - Bearsden
"Brodie is our third Flat-Coated Retriever. His predecessors had long and happy active lives, were very laid back, and needed minimal training, though they could decide to disappear over the horizon occasionally!
Brodie, our latest Flat Coat, is a lovely dog, big and strong with a mind of his own, and his own priorities. He can be over enthusiastic in his interactions, and could be intimidating (without meaning to be) for children, the elderly, and house visitors. We decided we needed to be more active in establishing a shared understanding of good manners, and ensure that he would respond when called, sit politely, and not knock over old ladies when greeting them.
Sandra has the right combination of cool, calm, collected, patient, positive creativity with Brodie, and his owners, to get us there! Her 'dog skills' and her 'people skills' are well matched. She inspires confidence, and a belief in the likelihood of progress, for both the human and the dog elements of the partnership, and it works.
Advice on diet (for the dog!) and equipment has combined
happily with the practical training programme. We still have work to do,
but we are confident that we can do it.
Brodie thinks she is the greatest thing since sliced bread, and we are working to acquire some of her aura!"
Martha - Bearsden
"We became the proud owners of a Labradoodle pup when she was just 7 weeks old and discovered quickly that she was going to be a handful. We had persevered at puppy training classes with our older dog and whilst classes were OK, we found we made slow progress.
As Martha was getting bigger and more powerful before our eyes we contacted Sandra to assist with her training. Even at the first session it was amazing to see the affect Sandra had on Martha, she could have had her doing circus tricks if she'd wanted! She gave us very clear and simple advice on how to continue the training at home and we found it was vital to keep this up. Sandra involved the whole family so everyone could take a turn working with Martha.
It was obvious that Martha loved each of her sessions
and responded so positively to Sandra. It was an enjoyable experience
for everyone and I wouldn't hesitate in recommending Sandra to work with
you and your dog, she impressed us throughout."
Bailey - Milngavie
"After much persuasion, my parents finally gave
in and decided to get a puppy. Bailey, an Australian Miniature Labradoodle,
who needed re-homed at just 20 weeks old, and seemed like the perfect
pup for us. It was really important to the family that Bailey would be
a kind, loving and well trained dog.
After our first training session with Sandra we could already see improvements with Bailey's behaviour. He responded to us much more, and loved any training activities that involved positive reinforcement through clicker training.
One of our main problems was getting Bailey to go into his crate while we were going out as he was displaying some separation anxiety.. Sandra helped us by giving us advice such as taking Bailey on a walk beforehand, and building up a positive association with being in his crate. It was a gradual process but now he goes into his crate without a fuss!
A big step which Sandra helped us on and made us feel more comfortable with was walking with Bailey off lead in the park. At the moment we're still practicing, and his on lead walking has also improved greatly - we have no doubt he'll be running around up at mugdock soon and coming back when he's called!
Thank you for all your help Sandra."
Coco - Milngavie
"As a family we had no experience of how hard it was and how much patience was needed to train a young puppy. Sandra quickly put both Coco the puppy, and ourselves at ease with her professionalism and speed of results using the clicker method.
After a few visits Coco was doing both basic obedience commands such as sit and come, and more amusing ones such as roll. With Sandras help we now feel that Coco has been given the grounding that she needs to help her develop into a more rounded and loved dog as she grows older.
We have no hesitation in recommending Sandra, whether you have a puppy yourself or need a refresher course for an older dog."
Stanley - Milngavie
"When my husband and I collected Stanley, our Border Terrier puppy, neither of us had owned a dog before and the prospect of training and bringing up a dog was quite daunting.
We contacted Sandra for help. We were having all sorts of problems with toilet training, and Stanley's refusal to walk outside. Sandra came round to the house weekly and showed us how "easy" it can be to train a puppy when you know what you are doing. She was a revelation!
She taught us how to use the 'clicker technique' to reward and reinforce Stanley's good behaviour. Some of the advice Sandra gives is common sense, although it can be difficult to think clearly when your puppy is misbehaving, and some of the information and training techniques we could never have thought of.
It is important to work hard to continue the methods Sandra tells us. We have tried our best to follow her advice and now we have a well behaved loving adorable dog. I have spoken to several dog owners who have used Sandra and they all have only good things to say about her training methods.
We have recommended Sandra to friends and will continue to do so as we are absolutely delighted with the positive impact she has had on Stanley.
Sandra always followed up her visits with e-mails going over what she had taught us. Since completing Stanley's formal training she has continued to keep in touch, showing us she genuinely cares for the dogs she trains."
Ozzy - Glasgow
"Sandra was recommended to us by Jacqui, who walks
our dog and runs a dog walking service, "Wildwalks". Our dog
Ozzy, is a one year old Staffordshire Bull/Dalmation Cross breed who we
recently re-homed. He was fairly obedient, yet when we took him for walks
he had some negative traits, such as pulling heavily on the lead, and
he rarely returned to us while off the lead on walks.
Sandra made him "work" for his rewards, and
within this session he re-visited some existing commands and he learned
some new commands - two important ones for us and him were; "Leave",
i.e. leaving items he was not allowed to eat or pick up, and the "Recall"
command, which now works really well when we are out for walks.
We would not hesitate in recommending "A Grade
Dog Training" to anyone, in fact we will be booking Sandra no doubt
in the near future to build upon what we have already learned.
Thank you Sandra!"
Esca - Lennoxtown
"We are thankful to Sandra for her help and advice with training for our lovely and lively Labradoodle, Esca. The training she gave us were not only for the lessons we had, but for life. You can tell Sandra has a heart for both dogs and people!
My husband and I had a lesson together and then I had three more. Two classes covered all basic commands like 'sit', 'down', 'stay' to fun ones like 'paw' and 'roll-over' The other two focused on revising some commands and were focused on loose lead walking and outside recall. Sandra also e-mailed notes of the training we had, which were a great help for continuing our practice.
We appreciated Sandra's professionalism and friendliness in each one of the sessions and Esca just loved her and her teaching methods!
So glad we met Sandra and had A-Grade Dog Training! Highly recommended!"
Juno - Erskine
"We called Sandra out to help us with one of our Siberian Huskies.
We had resigned ourselves to Juno, our 18 month old, being "untrainable" and literally sat in shock as Sandra showed us how teach him a range of commands (including a much needed "leave" command). Instantly we saw the improvements.
Not only did she give us the knowledge, but also the confidence to continue training. Whilst we had failed to crate train Juno several times in the past, we knew now with patience that anything was possible. Now when we leave the house we don't return to a room that is destroyed, but a happy, settled & relaxed dog.
We can't thank Sandra enough for all her help & highly recommend her to anyone needing help with their four-legged loved ones!"
Mack - Bearsden
"Sandra was recommended to us by several people and we now know why. We got our puppy Mack for our seven year old daughter, Skye, but their relationship wasn't great at first.
Sandra confirmed that Mack saw Skye as a litter mate and made sure that Skye did a lot of the training. Their relationship is so much better now, Mack is a great puppy and a lovely, well trained addition to our family.
We'll keep up with the training plans provided by Sandra and wouldn't hesitate to recommend her to other dog owners."
Dexter - Bearsden
"We found Sandra's input to be invaluable even though Dexter was not our first dog. She had an immediate rapport with Dexter and it was great to see her working with him. We enjoyed it too - and got some quick wins as well as some areas to work on.
It was well worth involving Sandra in Dexter's training, and we would happily recommend her."
Lottie - Bearsden
"I can't thank Sandra enough for her simple but effective training techniques. Having had an unruly spaniel before, I was determined that Lottie would be different and she is! Her recall is fantastic, her manners and obedience are great, and she even does a few tricks - thanks to a stay at Sandra's puppy hotel!!
A lot of people thought I was crazy getting a puppy along side Zoe, my 18th month old daughter but it has honestly been really easy and I only have Sandra to thank for that.
I couldn't wish for a better dog or dog trainer!"
Beau - Bearsden
"Sandra of A-Grade Dog Training was involved in Beau, my Cockapoo's initial puppy training, and when I felt a new challenge was needed for both Beau and myself, I undertook A-Grade's one to one pre-agility training.
Sandra brought a range of agility equipment to my garden, and week by week we built on the various obstacles until Beau could complete the course.
From tunnels to weaves and jumps, we both had great fun, and I would recommend this kind of activity as it is a fantastic way to bond with your dog and to build a positive relationship based on trust."
"Sandra has been a great help in getting our puppy on the right track - lots of sensible, practical advice covering everything from house training to recall and general obedience.
We've still got plenty work to do with Cassie but we now have a clear idea of how to deal with various situations and it makes the whole dog experience much more fun."
Skye - Balmore
"I called out Sandra of A-Grade as Skye, my Rhodesian Ridgeback was failing to listen to me, pulling on lead, jumping up and stubbornly refusing to come back to me off lead.
She is my first dog and I wanted to improve her behaviour. Skye is now doing really well with almost 100% obedience on recall and is no longer jumping on people she meets. She is still excellent with other dogs, with really good social skills. Sandra - I don't think we need you any more - you've done too good a job!
All the best, Ruth."
Harry - Bearsden
"Thank you so much Sandra for your training sessions with Harry our four month old Westie pup. Over the "fast track" puppy training course, I couldn't believe how quickly you had him responding to basic commands - sit, stay, leave, lie down, stand, lead walking etc and above all we are delighted with his recall, even when there are other very interesting dogs, smells and people around to tempt him!
I would not hesitate to recommend Sandra to anyone looking for first rate obedience training for their dog. She has a fantastic rapport with dogs (and their owners!) and both Harry and I had great fun during his training sessions, initially using clicker training inside our home which gave him an excellent headstart with no external distractions, and later in the street and park practising walking on and off the lead.
Harry is a very sociable and lively wee dog who absolutely loves playing with other dogs and I am sure he benefited from one-on-one home training as there would have been too many distractions for him in group training. Our weekly "homework" sheets were very useful in helping me to remember and regularly practise the techniques Sandra taught us in our sessions. We now feel we have a very happy and well-behaved little dog who gives us great pleasure and we have had compliments from other people about how obedient he is for a young puppy.
Harry and I will miss our weekly sessions with you Sandra, thank you again for all your help and big licks and wags from Harry!"
Zeke - Bearsden
"We recently adopted an adult German Shepherd dog. Although he is a very friendly and relatively obedient dog, he had some traits which we felt we needed help with. So we contacted Sandra at A-Grade Dog Training.
She gave us step-by-step guidance, with "home work" after each session. The more time and effort we put in, the quicker we could see the benefits of the training.
Sandra's friendly and helpful nature made each session feel like we were meeting up with a friend. Training became fun and exciting! In addition, the training also helped us bond well with our new and happy family member."
Poppy - Bearsden
"Sandra, can I give you an update on Poppy .. she is a wee star, I am so proud of her!
I took her and Millie out last night and she was really good listening to me all the time, was not pulling on the lead and only got a couple of treats on the walk. On our walk this morning she was still really good and didn't pull at all, what a difference I can't thank you enough!
Looking forward to our next lesson!"
Alfie - Summerston
"Alfie is a Siberian Husky and from six weeks old when we got him he was very boisterous, hyperactive and mischievous. This became unmanageable when Alfie grew into a powerful, adult sized dog. Our vet referred us to Sandra of A-Grade Dog Training as we really needed help in controlling Alfie's behaviour.
As part of an obedience training programme we learned how to control Alfie's mouthing, biting, mounting and dominant behaviour. This was combined with a change of diet and increased exercise, and the obedience training really helped stimulate Alfie mentally, making him less likely to get up to mischief.
Now at just under a year old, he is much calmer and far better behaved. One other major issue with Alfie was pulling on the lead whilst out walking him. I didn't think you could ever teach a Husky not to pull but with Sandra's recommendation of a harness combined with lead walk training he now walks close by and does not pull us off our feet!
I can't believe how much Alfie has changed in just three sessions with Sandra and I would recommend her training to anyone with a problematic dog! We have a much happier dog and an easier life! Thanks Sandra!"
Bella - Maryhill
"Excellent training sessions! You get so much more when it's 1 to 1 than in a group setting, as it's tailored to your dog's needs. Sandra is knowledgeable and reliable and emails a recap on what you did in each session so everyone in the family can follow it.
I saw a difference in Bella after one session! Family and friends have also commented on her progress By implementing the training from the sessions, Bella has really improved, especially in her recall.
Please use Sandra as she is fully qualified - other companies may not be and you only want the best for your dog!"
Barney - Milngavie
"I was keen to get our Cockapoo puppy, Barney started on his obedience training as soon as possible but didn't have a clue where to start with my week old unruly ball of fur! Then came Sandra to the rescue!
She bonded with Barney immediately and he tuned into her in a way I wouldn't have believed had I not witnessed it first hand. In the first session Barney learned the commands sit, down, leave and recall, and he had so much fun in the process.
Sandra's common sense approach gave me confidence to carry on with the training in between sessions and Barney quickly progressed. By the 4th session he had learned all the basic commands and I was left with a happy and well behaved dog.
Sandra's methods worked wonders for Barney and myself and I would have no hesitation in recommending her to new dog owners."
Jasper - Bearsden
"We wanted our new puppy, Jasper, to be well trained and decided to go for the 4 week puppy course with Sandra. We thought this would be good so that the whole family could be involved and we all, including Jasper, thoroughly enjoyed the sessions which Sandra tailored to suit us.
Sandra was excellent with Jasper & instantly had him doing what she asked. Jasper continues to do well. After our last session we have started letting him off lead, and so far so good. We also had a comment from another dog owner who was very impressed at how well he was walking on the lead.
We and Jasper have all definitely benefited from the course."
Hope - Bearsden
"Hope is a rescue dog from Romania so when she came to live with us at 18 months everything was new to her and us!
It was fantastic having Sandra come to the house and work on training with Hope, myself and the children and it was just lovely to see Hope by the end of the first session sitting, lying down and giving a paw.
We did the block of four sessions and it has really given us an excellent foundation to build on.
Sandra's enthusiasm and knowledge gave me confidence in settling in Hope and the children have really bonded with her through the training. It's reassuring to know she is there for more sessions should we need them. Thank you, Sandra!"
Coco - Silverburn
I would just like to say thank you so much for your training Coco. We started training her early (12 weeks) as you know and she has most definitely benefited from your excellent training.
I can honestly say if it weren't for you, I think I would have had to re-think being a dog owner as the stress of not being able to control my dog would have been too much.
I look forward to doing an intermediate course with you once I've had the chance to fully implement all the techniques you have shown me to date.
Kind regards, Stephen"
Marley - Cumbernauld
"Sandra was recommended to us by our vet after our new Goldendoodle puppy Marley became shy and scared of new situations and people.
Having completed our training with Sandra , Marley has grown into a happy confident boy who loves meeting people, showing off his obedience skills and also tricks such as high five! Sandra also helped us work on Marley's recall and during our final training session Marley came back to me every time he was called - even though Sandra was distracting him with chicken treats. This is a big achievement considering Marley is a very food motivated dog!
My children also enjoyed being involved in Marley's training, and with ongoing practice this will hopefully help them bond well. Thanks again for all your help Sandra and Marley and I look forward to doing more advanced training with you in the future."
Brodie - Bearsden
"Hi Sandra, Marlen said I should e-mail you because.............. yesterday we had friends for lunch, and the furball was PERFECT! He wagged his tail, sat, chatted amiably, lay down while we ate, watched them leave, and helped tidy up. Not a paw out of place throughout!
We think it is because he has a certificate, and recognises the need to live up to it!"
Dougall - Anniesland
"Following your last session when you worked with Dougall on his aggressive barking and lunging at visitors coming to the door, I have practiced the techniques you left me with - and today my friend came around and Dougall was just brilliant! She says she has never seen him so calm!
I have also passed on your name to a couple of people in my area who are in need of the help of a trainer, and I'll continue to recommend you to anyone who asks. Thank you!"
Maisie - Bearsden
"When Maisie the Lakeland Terrier joined our family it was important to us all to get dog training to ensure we had an obedient dog that would be good with children and for assistance with basic house training. Both my husband and I had grown up with dogs but the training had not been our responsibility as young children so we definitely lacked knowledge in that area.
Sandra at A-Grade Dog Training was recommended to us by a good friend and Maisie began her training at 10 weeks old. The weekly sessions were practical, hands on, relaxed and fun for both Maisie and ourselves. Sandra is very patient, helpful and relaxed in her training methods making it easy for you to continue the work between sessions.
Maisie is now eight months old and is a fantastic family pet, and we still continue to use the methods Sandra taught us. I would have no hesitation in recommending Sandra and A-Grade Dog Training to anyone looking for training assistance."
Hamish - Blanefield
"I would like to say a huge thank you to Sandra
for all the assistance she gave me when I contacted her for help with
our 11 month old Border Collie, Hamish.
Abandoning this after week 3, we plodded on together
with training, using books and advice from others on the basics.
From the very first session with Sandra, we could see changes - she taught me how to discourage his nipping without it escalating in to a situation where I was angry and he was frustrated. From there, we learned all sorts of new things using clicker and reward techniques, including how to discourage Hamish from persistent chewing of furniture!
Since then, we have never looked back. One to one training
with a professional like Sandra is to be highly recommended. Our problems
were solved and we learned so much more besides.
"A-Grade Dog training is fantastic. Both our Miniature Schnauzer puppy and our family have really benefited from the training.
Koko was taught the commands in such a nice manner
by way of simple healthy treats. We were astonished how Sandra got Koko
to learn effortlessly.
Sandra has an excellent manner with dogs and we all thoroughly enjoyed the training sessions".
"We started training our puppy, Buddy, with Sandra when he was two months old. The training made a real difference to Buddy's behaviour from the start and gave us the knowledge on how to handle him properly.
As first time dog owners we really appreciated all the help and reassurance Sandra gave us which made us more confident. Buddy learned a number of valuable obedience commands, including a fabulous recall, which means that Buddy comes back to us every single time he is called so important as we wanted to be able to let Buddy off safely in the knowledge that he would respond to our call.
Buddy really enjoyed his training sessions both indoors and outside, and he is now a very happy wee dog. I would recommend a-grade dog training to all new puppies and their owners"!!
Alice - Bearsden
"We would like to thank Sandra for all her work with our crazy boxer girl Alice. Training is essential with this breed and you have given us the tools to continue working with Alice. We were impressed from the outset that you could have our dog responding so quickly and also seeing how much Alice enjoyed herself too.
The girls are enjoying being involved with her training especially when they see Alice responding so well to their commands. We will certainly be recommending Sandra to anyone that is need of guidance with their dog.
Pity clicker training doesn't work with husbands ....!"
Claude - Blanefield
"Claude is my first dog and since I had heard that whippets can be quite tricky I wanted to make sure that he was trained properly as I didn't want to end up with a difficult dog.
Sandra came well recommended by two other dog owners and I was incredibly impressed. She has a lovely, easy manner and is a pleasure to spend time with. But she is also extremely professional and knowledgeable and it was a joy to see how quickly she could form a positive, working relationship with Claude. He was hardly past the three month mark yet he could sit, down, stay, leave, recall and give a paw etc. We've now had four sessions and not only is his recall extremely good but he is very well-behaved considering he is still just a puppy.
I think that anyone with a puppy or an adult dog who exhibits any difficult behaviour will beneift so much from some sessions with Sandra".
Rannoch - Scotstoun
"Sandra, thank you so much for all the fantastic work you've done with Rannoch and me. Working with your fantastic action plan has resulted in Rannoch walking brilliantly on the lead.
I am also now using click/reward much more effectively, resulting in me having two of the best behaved and obedient golden retrievers in Mugdock"!!
Belle - Bonnybridge
"When we brought our West Highland Terrier puppy, Belle, home we quickly realised that she was going to be the most unruly dog we ever had, and so we called on Sandra of A-Grade Dog Training. Sandra was highly recommended to us by our vet, Martin Veterinary Centre.
We decided on a course of four one to one home training sessions, and after just one visit Belle was proving that A-Grade Dog Training was the way forward not only in training her, but also in giving us vital guidance on how to properly handle and work with her in a positive and kind way, so that we could get full enjoyment from our new family pet, and build a great relationship with her too.
Sandra would work on various training techniques, from all obedience commands, walking well on her lead, park recall to 'leave' - Belle was mouthing quite badly and this was stopped almost immediately. Sandra left us homework to put these skills, hints and tips into practice. We were able to include our five year old Grandson Adam in this too.
After just four sessions, Belle became proficient in what she had learned, and was given a certificate to recognise her achievement. (My grandson also received a Junior Trainer Certificate which he proudly shared with his classmates at school!).
Sandra has a very special gift and we cannot thank her enough! Anyone looking to train their dog should most definitely use A-Grade Dog Training!
All that's left to say is thank you Sandra for giving
us the family pet we wanted".
Cassie - Bearsden
"We called upon the services of A-Grade Dog Training for our 2½yr old Springer Spaniel Collie X, as we had been experiencing a number of problems with her.
Rescued as a young dog, Cassie had a total lack of confidence in herself and as a result wasn't even comfortable in engaging with anyone visiting our home. She barked excessively, pulled heavily on the lead and displayed a terrified reaction and fear of children, especially where there was movement and noise made, cowering and pulling in the opposite direction to get away.
When Sandra first visited our home, she took a patient approach to building a relationship with Cassie, and by the end of our first session, Cassie was very comfortable around Sandra. The rapport building went from strength to strength with each session, and by the second session, Cassie was so confident and happy she bounded towards Sandra eager to continue her training!
By completion of our course, Cassie is so much improved! Her pulling on lead has ceased, she is much more at ease outside, her recall is a lot better and her barking has now been curbed to a more normal level, especially from the window!
Lastly, Sandra's methods and techniques for helping Cassie become more comfortable around children have meant she is much more relaxed and less likely to see children as a threat.
All in all, she is a much more confident dog, and although there is still some work to be done, Cassie is much happier, and so are we".
Iona - Alexandria
"I am very happy with the outcome of your training. Iona now walks off lead with me in park, returns when told and no more "accidents" on the kitchen floor.
I cannot speak highly enough of your training with her, and would have no problem recommending you to anyone desirous of your services. Many thanks Sandra"
Baxter - Anniesland
"When Baxter my Cairn terrier was 12 weeks old, I decided it was time for him to go to 'school'.
I wanted 'one to one' training to ensure that he got the best start, and I would end up being the owner of a lovely dog I could take anywhere and most importantly that we would both enjoy each other.
Baxter was immediately smitten with Sandra when she was teaching him new commands...................and she made it look so easy. It's all down to the friendly clicker method of training and of course that voice!! (I need to get Sandra's voice on a CD!).
Sandra gave me all the building blocks and skills to encourage Baxter to be a responsive, well behaved dog and it's now up me to continue and be consistent with his training.
I would recommend Sandra to both new and existing dog owners and would not hesitate to use her services in the future if need be".
Milo - Jordanhill
"As older dog lovers, with past experience of one old deaf dog and one old blind dog, we were finding our new and very lively Labrador puppy something of a challenge! We had done our homework . . . read the recommended books, watched the video clips, talked to other dog owners . . . but were becoming increasingly confused by so many different ways to achieve "the perfect puppy"! None worked for us!
We were beginning to think we had given a home to an
Needless to say, we contacted Sandra, explained our feelings and our lack of success and signed up for four sessions of puppy-training. It was the best move we could have made! Other testimonials outline the contents of these lessons, conducted at home and in a nearby park.
I would simply add that Sandra not only taught our
puppy the rudiments of good behaviour but she taught us (in the nicest
possible way!) how to handle difficult situations and gave us the confidence
and reassurance we needed. The real training is only just beginning and
we have a long way to go yet, but without Sandra's expert guidance we
may not be enjoying our lovely dog quite so much! Thank you, Sandra! You
really are a "one-off!"
Hudson - Glasgow
"Sandra, we cannot thank you enough for all the training you done with Hudson.
Before you came I couldn't sit on the floor and play with him as he would start to nip at my hands and arms and also when we went for walks he would constantly pull or want to chase the cars or leaves, but now I can roll about the floor with him playing with all his toys and not once does he attempt to nip!
As for his walking he walks like a little angel now no pulling or dragging me along. Also my mum was having a few problems with walking him and him wanting to chase cars as he's so strong compared to her, but now he walks great alongside her and she loves taking him for walks now.
This means so much to us all as he's a big boy and was difficult to get under control, but you have made it so much easier for us.
So from the bottom of our hearts we thank you so very much for everything that you have taught Hudson and myself. Without you we would never be at the stage we are at and I wouldn't be able to play with my big boy as much.
So thank you Sandra - we are going to miss you coming for our school days and Hudson is going to miss his favourite teacher so much. We would HIGHLY recommend you to anyone without a doubt and we will be doing so! You are a legend and amazing at what you do, not only did we gain a great obedient dog we also gained a great friend and trainer in you so thank you once again".
Cally - Blanefield
* Update *
"Further to Cally's recall issues, you'll be pleased to hear that I had a great walk with Cally this morning! I met a lady on the moor who told me she thinks Cally is 100% improved!!! I didn't know her but she knew me from Cally always being lost and looked for!
I walked quite a long way with her and Cally was great, coming back and even stopping on command without the lead on!
So a huge thank you for your help so far, I'm feeling much more positive".
Molly - Anniesland
"Molly is our first dog and has been a lively
and fun addition to our family. She is full of energy from the minute
she opens her eyes and loves her long walks where she can run free, however
even now at 16 months old she hates being on the lead. She bites the lead
and jumps up constantly which causes me to trip over her and walks can
be very stressful because of this.
Lola & Mia - Lenzie
"Sandra, we can't thank you enough for all the help we have received from you. Lola and Mia have just loved working with you and get great fun out of learning all their new commands.
They really have become two amazing obedient little girls. Look forward to our advanced sessions in the future".
Darcy - Lennoxtown
* UPDATE *
"Hi Sandra - just had to let you know we just
met two dogs out on a walk with Darcy .. he was off lead and came back
to me right away when called!!!! So proud and it's thanks to you!!"
Bertie - Bearsden
* Wk1 puppy training update *
"Sandra - we most certainly found your first session
helpful. I think we were both feeling a bit at sea and I've no doubt that
Bertie was aware of this in some way.
Your notes are excellent and we're looking forward
to following through your suggestions".
Mollie - Bearsden
"As a first time dog owner I was excited about
having a puppy but nervous about letting her develop bad habits through
I would not hesitate to recommend Sandra as she is obviously someone who loves animals but is firm yet kind with both dogs and owners so the end result is a well trained dog".
Molly - Bearsden
"With Molly fast approaching 2 years old and all
of a sudden becoming just a little reactive with some dogs I decided to
take matters in hand and call in Sandra and A-Grade Dog Training - and
I'm so glad I did!
Molly adored Sandra from the off and our training sessions
were not only informative and helpful but were hugely enjoyable too. Even
our 'homework' was fun! There has definitely been significant improvement
over the visits.
The fact that Sandra comes out into real situations
with you is invaluable. She not only gives you confidence to deal with
the situations as they arise she leaves you with the tools and techniques
necessary for continuing development.
Molly is at home today with her progress certificate
feeling very pleased with herself, but little does she know, there will
be no resting on her laurels!
I have no hesitation in recommending Sandra and A-Grade
Dog Training. It will be one of the best decisions you will make for you
and your dog".
Floyd - West End
"We contacted Sandra to help us with the training of our new puppy, a miniature labradoodle called Floyd. Sandra was brilliant with him, and us!!! Sandra manages to make the training fun for everyone. We couldn't believe all that Floyd achieved in only three sessions.
If you are looking for a dog trainer I would highly recommend you contact Sandra, she is very professional and extremely knowledgeable on all things canine."
Ruby - Maryhill
"We booked Ruby in for group of training sessions
with Sandra which are now finished.
Sandra worked very well with Ruby and from the moment she worked with her, Ruby was able to obey commands and adapted very well to the clicker training.
She has since learned how to return to us when off
the lead at the park and lots of other things which we never expected
her to be able to do so quickly.
Ruby is a smashing wee dog and we are regularly complimented
on how well behaved she is, especially when she is off the lead in the
We are very grateful to Sandra and the super work she has done as our other dog who died at Christmas could not do half of the things that Ruby can now do".
"We contacted Sandra to help us with behavioural
problems we were having with our two young La Chon brothers, George and
Bertie especially recall when off the lead.
Dogs from the same litter have particular problems,
tending to listen to each other rather than us. Sandra patiently introduced
us to positive reinforcement training methods which, with separate sessions
for each dog, has transformed their behaviour.
We can now let them off the lead and confidently rely
on them to return even in the face of other distractions.
With other behavioural problems Sandra always came
up with a sensible solution and followed up each training session with
a e- mail summarising the lessons.
Alfie - Lenzie
"Alfie, our 2.1/2 year old Tibetan Terrier, whom we have had since he was 10 week old was a challenge to say the least. Very boisterous, he gave our now 13 year old Bearded Collie, Misty, a very hard time initially.
Training with Alfie was going nowhere fast until Sandra at A-Grade Dog Training became involved. She quickly established how reward-focused Alfie was, and used this to her advantage in training him. A 'leave' command was a huge issue as several pairs of glasses plus mobile phone have been 'Alfie'd', but progress has been steady and he definitely thinks before acting a lot more.
His lead walking, i.e. not pulling, is massively better
too. All aspects of his training have vastly improved and one thing in
particular we have noticed is how much more affectionate he has become,
almost as if he knows he is being a good dog.
Getting in touch with Sandra was one of our best decisions."
Thanks for all your help, will be in touch in due course to let you know
how things are going!"
Jenson - Lennoxtown
"Jenson absolutely loved Sandra and had so much
fun during our training sessions. The sessions were relaxed & learning
new commands for Jenson was not a chore but just like play time! He was
like a little sponge, eager to please.
Sandra also provided an advice sheet to keep me on
track with training which I found really helpful.
Thanks again Sandra for all your help/advice"
Georgia - Milngavie
"I have had dogs all my life and thought why do
I need a trainer? But I couldn't have been more wrong.
From the first lesson Georgia took to Sandra really
well. Georgia is a clever wee dog but needed guidance and Sandra was able
to show us how to use the clicker and reward system so that Georgia really
enjoyed the lesson and by the end of the first session she was sitting,
lying down and staying on command.
We then progressed to walking on a lead and recall
- both of which we were finding very difficult without sandra's help.
We wouldn't have been able to accomplish so much so quickly on our own".
Kai - Bishopbriggs
Kai is a big strong dog and basically used to take
me for a walk by the way he pulled on his lead, but within 10 minutes
Sandra had him walking with me at my side with slack on his lead which
is quite amazing.
The last of the sessions over in the park was fantastic,
Kai had virtually a 100% success rate when recalling him even with the
distraction of other dogs and a big muddy puddle that he really wanted
to roll in!"
* Update *
" I really enjoyed your work and I am chuffed to bits at how Kai is coming along - had him twice for recall sessions up the park last night and he was bounding back to me every time I shouted on him. I even managed to get him to come back twice by using the hand signals alone when he was looking at me. Elaine and I will both continue to do the things you have taught us as we can both see the benefits for Kai and for us. If you are ever passing in the future please don't hesitate to drop in on the off chance and see how Kai is coming along. Mark".
Ozzy - Milton
* UPDATE *
"Hi Sandra, we were out with Ozzy, and we passed
about ten dogs with success, no growling, no barking, no lunging!! He
turned all by himself until we saw a GSD who decided that she would bark,
Ozzy returned fire with two or three of his own but settled immediately
as we walked away!!!
Nanuq - Bishopbriggs
"We cannot recommend Sandra and A-Grade Dog Training
enough. Before we found Sandra, our gorgeous boy was constantly nipping
and mouthing to the extent I was unable to be around him without it happening,
as he was growing and becoming more powerful it was becoming a bigger
Nanuq fell in love with Sandra immediately! Even after
our first session he was a different dog. We had already taught him the
basics (sit, lie down, paw etc), but he also needed work on a few other
things. Sandra taught our boy to stop mouthing, walk perfectly on his
lead, and helped us master our off-lead recall for when he was in the
park, to name a few! Sandra's methods were fun and engaging for Nanuq
and for us too, we always had good fun!
I am now able to play with Nanuq without being used
as a human chew toy, and he listens to everything we say now as a result
of Sandra working her magic!
Mollie - Bishopbriggs
"I contacted Sandra when Mollie - my beautiful
Border Collie - who needed help with her pulling during walks. We had
Mollie on a harness but her pulling (not the worst Sandra had seen) made
walks stressful and unpleasant so we tended to take Mollie to places where
we could let her off of the lead as soon as possible and just play ball
but, being a border collie, this could make her too excitable at night.
When Sandra arrived we did a check-in/recall session
to get her used to the clicker but it turned out that Mollie didn't respond
to the clicker: sometimes she ran away and hid in the corner and other
times she just refused to do anything when the clicker was around! We
had already tried and given up with the clicker when she was 3 months
because of this behavior so we used the word 'yes' instead of a 'click'.
Sandra taught us how to get Mollie to 'stay', and she
will now stay on command
brilliant for getting out of the front
door! Sandra also taught us how to get Mollie to leave our clothes/shoes
alone with a 'mine' command, which has been a life/clothes saver! We also
allocated a 'dig dig' area in the garden for Mollie to bury her toys and
bones in, instead of having a garden covered in craters that resembled
Mollie was taught to understand that a 'loose-lead
means good' and within one session and since then walks have been an absolute
pleasure! We can now take Mollie on hour-long walks without having sore
shoulders and she is much happier and calmer as well. I've had several
people comment on how well she walks next to me, which is wonderful to
hear when you've put time and effort in.
I cannot recommend Sandra enough! Her techniques and even her 'way' with dogs is so good. She handles the owners pretty well also :-) Nothing was a problem and if one technique didn't work, Sandra was happy to use another. I am so happy we found Sandra, she has made owning Mollie an absolute delight!"
George - Milngavie
* Update *
"Hi Sandra, Just to let you know I spoke to Buster's owner yesterday as he was sitting in the garden when George and I went past. We did some approaches and George was interested but no barking. Very pleased".
Mack - West End
"We are very glad we decided to train our puppy,
Mack, with you, Sandra. It has made the whole learning experience a pleasure.
You have not only trained the dog but you have trained the owners! Our
skills have improved immensely and we feel confident in our ability to
control what he does. We also found the homework sheets very useful to
Mack has come on in leaps and bounds since we started
our training with you and we are already reaping the benefits. We have
all the right tools to continue his training now.
We had thought about attending a local group session
but we are very pleased that we made the decision instead to go for one-to-one
training with you. We can't imagine we would have made similar progress
in a group.
We would have no hesitation in recommending you to
anyone and have been singing your praises to our friends and family.
Chico - Summerston
Chico, and his reactive barking behaviour, email received from his owner, below:
"Chico and I are doing really well with the training, can't believe the difference in him! My mum came round last night and she was very impressed. Chico is sitting and lying for me pretty much straight away. We have only had one episode at the window where he barked once and then stopped so fingers crossed!
Really happy with how things went on Monday, thank
you very much."
Benji - Bearsden
I contacted Sandra at A-Grade Dog Training because my Yorkshire Terrier, Benji, would not come back when called which meant that we (and our dog walker) could never let him off lead.
I cant recommend Sandra enough for all her help
and words of wisdom when work with our cheeky rascal Benji! She has a
tremendous amount of patience and give us great techniques and words of
encouragement with Benji on his recall. Getting our weekly homework
gave us reminders and great training tips for us to continue practicing.
Since the training finished, Benji has done his disappearing trick a couple of times (ie someone left the garden gate open!) and hes actually come back when called, with lots of praise from us.
Thanks so much Sandra, we appreciate all your hard
Meicah - Dullatur
** UPDATE **
Meicah's recall training - Sandra, I thought I'd let you know that Meicah has been amazing when out and about and off lead in the fields.
We went to a bigger field and she has continued to come back every time. Last night she did a good 100ft recall, and after that she kept looking back and checking where we were - I can't believe it! The big test will be the loch as she loves water so much, but so far 100% improvement!
Zebedee - Milngavie
"Thanks to Sandra, we have a dog who comes when we call him. We all really enjoyed the sessions with Sandra. She was great at getting the children involved so he's used to all of us training him.
Sandra has shown us that we can train Zebedee to do anything if we put our mind to it. We also learned to see things from his perspective, so hopefully he's not too confused by the way we deal with him.
He's a happy dog!"
Skylar - Bearsden
A big thank you to Sandra for helping us to understand and train our new puppy, your help was invaluable to us (first time puppy owners).
We really enjoyed our experience in the knowledge that we were being "taught" as well as our pup.
Beau - Riddrie
Beau had a fantastic time training with Sandra, as did I! The methods used are so much fun and received a fantastic response from my girl. Beau is now a little trickster, trying out everything she has learned in a bid please!
Having let her off the lead for the first time in a public area when working with Sandra, my own confidence that Beau will come back when she is called has grown massively!
I honestly cannot thank you enough Sandra, I have the best relationship possible with my little pup and you're training sessions have her coming to me when called and behaving a lot better than most dogs!
She is an absolute star and it's all thanks to you!"
Heidi - West End
Having Sandra train Heidi, our Hungarian Viszla, was much better value for money than puppy classes. The one on one attention was invaluable and watching Heidi learn so much so quickly was great.
We'd recommend Sandra to all dog owners!
Darcy, Corrie & Marty- Lennoxtown
Sandra, just wanted to say thank you very much for all the help and guidance you gave me with my three "boys".
After trying different methods of training I decided I wanted to learn more about how to use a clicker to train, but was totally confused by the books I was reading as they tell you what to do but not what to do when things are not working. That's where you came in and with your help I now understand more and am using the clicker successfully with all three boys.
You also taught me to always stay calm with them even when they are naughty! One of the most important lessons I learned was to play with and have fun with them and we do. Darcy and Corrie are not sure about chasing balls though, but they do enjoy Agility. I really enjoyed the agility afternoon we had and hope we can do it again sometime
I would recommend that anyone who is looking for training,
or is having problems with their dog to get in touch with you - they couldn't
be in safer hands. Thanks again.
Colin - Bishopbriggs
We can't thank Sandra enough for everything she has taught us. Colin is our first puppy together, we have both had dogs as children in the past but were unsure how to go about his training. We contacted Sandra when Colin was only 15 weeks old and after only one session he was sitting on command and had learnt an excellent "leave" command. Colin was unsure of the clicker training as he was a bit sensitive to the noise but Sandra had a great alternative and he has learned so much.
Colin was a typical puppy, full of mischief, chewing everything he can get his paws on, chasing the cat and taking off in the park. He is now leaving objects on command (including the cat!) and comes back when called every time!
Being a young puppy we knew how important it was to have Colin trained effectively for his own safely and that of my shoes! Sandra's methods are very kind and effective and Colin responded so well as the training is positive, which he loved.
Colin is now able to go out on walks off lead and I am confident that he will come back when called, which has impressed countless other dog owners in the park. We are also able to continue with his training as we now have an understanding of how a dog's mind works and I would absolutely recommend Sandra to anyone! Thanks again!
Harvey - Milngavie
We just wanted to say a big thank you to Sandra for all the training and advice.
Harvey had no real training until Sandra came along
and neither did we!! He is now a calmer and better behaved pooch but with
all his personality! We even think we can spot other A-Grade graduates
when we are out! Thanks again.
Louie - Bearsden
We recently became the proud owners of 'Louie' a Black
Minature Poodle. It has been 10 years since our last Poodle died and we
decided that we needed some professional training for Louie and thankfully
we found Sandra of A-Grade Dog Training.
Archie - Jordanhill
Archie our Black Labrador had puppy obedience sessions with Sandra starting at 8 weeks old. He can now sit, stay, lie down, stand, touch, leave, walk well on the lead, and importantly recall on command. He's now only 14 weeks old and happily trots along beside us on the lead without pulling, and comes back every time he is called even when distractions are around.
Sandra's methods of training are kind and work quickly. She explains why she is doing something so it's easier to understand from the dogs point of view. The clicker training has been so effective and Archie has enjoyed every training session as much as we have.
We now have a dog who is trained at a stage when many people are just starting to consider taking their dog to puppy classes.
We've been so fortunate in finding Sandra who has a genuine love for dogs. She has been able to give us great breed specific advice and has emailed us instructions/handouts following every lesson.
Thank you Sandra - we will definitely stay in touch!
Hudson - Bishopbriggs
"I have a bouncy Labrador, Hudson, who is nearly two and was looking for someone to come to my house and do some one to one training with us. I had tried several local group training sessions but neither Hudson or myself enjoyed them or got much out of them. I found Sandra's website through a quick Google search and was instantly drawn to her friendly approach - I knew she was the right person for us.
Hudson, is generally a good boy, he just needed some refresher training to tame his excitable jumping and general boisterousness. He loved Sandra the minute she walked in the door - Sandra is a real dog person with a warm and friendly nature, and I have found from past experience that this isn't the case with all dog trainers. She was really interested in Hudson and wanted to get to know him, which really impressed me. She asked me at the very first lesson what I wanted to work on and really focused on those very things. Unlike group classes, which just go down a ticky box list of all the things they think your dog should be trained to do, Sandra tailored every session to mine and Hudson's needs.
Hudson has definitely calmed down a lot since Sandra's first visit, and that is due Sandra's great techniques and my daily training with him. He is jumping around like a mad man a lot less and now realises that he gets positive attention if he stays on all four paws.
Hudson and I will miss our sessions with Sandra, but we have made a friend of life and we are reassured that she is always on the other end of the phone or email if we need her, even if it's just to ask a follow up question.
I can't recommend Sandra highly enough, and if you
are looking for a friendly dog trainer who definitely knows her stuff
then you have come to the right place."
Radley - Bearsden
"My adorable, hyperactive, naughty, Border Terrier puppy, Radley, was virtually uncontrollable.
Sandra came to administer her fast track puppy training course - within minutes, Radley was eating out of her hand ( and not nipping her hand or ankles.) and happily obeying instructions to sit, stay and leave. I have to regard this as a miracle.
As soon as I have learned to keep up with Radley's wonderful progress, I'm going to ask Sandra to do the next level of training.
For anyone with a recalcitrant puppy, I can highly recommend Sandra's methods and effectiveness , she is a GENIUS.
Kevin - Bearsden
"Thank you so much for all the help you have given our family as we train our German Shepherd, Kevin. Even from the first session with you, we all felt so much more confident in handling Kevin and enjoying him!
Your 1-1 sessions in our home fitted so well in to our lifestyle, even to the point of organising to come over our son's lunch hour so that he could be involved!
You have helped us lay the foundations for an obedient, calm dog who we would take anywhere with confidence! Thank you!"
